Grupo Alves Bandeira highlights results of national study on low-carbon fuels

2025-10-20

Grupo Alves Bandeira, through its participation in the Platform for the Promotion of Low-Carbon Fuels (PCBC) and as a member represented by EDIP – Association of Petroleum Product Distribution Companies, took part in the official presentation of the study "Low-Carbon Fuels in Portugal – Perspectives for 2030”, held on October 7 at the Centro Cultural de Belém in Lisbon.

Developed by the Portuguese academic community — namely the NOVA School of Science and Technology, the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal, and the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria — the study reinforces the importance of Low-Carbon Fuels (LCFs), including biodiesel, HVO, RFNBOs, and biomethane, as an essential component of a balanced, inclusive, and realistic decarbonization strategy.

Among its conclusions, the study confirms the critical role of low-carbon fuels as a necessary complement to electrification, not only in mobility but also in sectors where technological substitution is not yet viable. Without this contribution, achieving the European Union’s greenhouse gas emission reduction targets would be extremely challenging.

In this context, the document also reveals that Portugal possesses the technical capacity and endogenous resources necessary for the production of biofuels, provided that consistent, stable, and collaborative policies are implemented — policies capable of mobilizing investment, ensuring regulatory predictability, and promoting a fair and sustainable energy transition.

The study further highlights that, even by 2030, around 90% of the heavy vehicle fleet will remain powered by internal combustion engines, underscoring the fundamental role of liquid and gaseous low-carbon fuels in reducing emissions and maintaining economic competitiveness.

The event, which brought together more than one hundred participants, including industry representatives, policymakers, and academics, also emphasized the importance of cooperation between public and private stakeholders in fostering more sustainable mobility and accelerating the path toward carbon neutrality by 2050.

With a legacy of five decades dedicated to energy and mobility, Grupo Alves Bandeira once again reaffirms its commitment to promoting a sustainable, fair, and accessible energy transition for all.
